there is some energy and some enthusiasm heading into 2012 but i don't think it is at the point where they can feel confident. the second thing is they are not going to convince everyone on their own merits given the state of the economy and world. then they are going to have to draw a very clear contrast between the president and the republican nominee, which almost certainly will be mitt romney. if they can't get their own supporters out on their own merits they have to paint why romney is not a good alternative. that will be a mental they will have to drive home among independent voters, blue color voters, affluent suburbanites. they will have to turn out those people on the fence. then in terms of their own coalition it will be important to get young people out, hispanics and african-americans out, get sing womle women out. that was really the core of the obama coalition in 2008. they have a pretty daunting task ahead of them. that said, i do think the president has been doing better in recent months. i think it started with has jobs speech last september which was long overdue. n
